In 1944, a Jewish ghetto was created in Budapest. It was located directly adjacent to the Jewish Museum in the city. That same year, more than 500,000 Hungarian Jews were deported, most to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.
In 1985, a memorial park was laid out at at the edge of the historical grounds of the Jewish ghetto. In the rear section of the park is a metal sculpture in the form of a weeping willow on whose leaves the names of Holocaust victims are written.
