in detail
In 2000, a working group headed by Sidsel Levin, chair of the Oslo Jewish Community, was set up to establish the Jewish Museum in Oslo.
The museum will present the history of the Jews in Norway from 1851, the first permitted settlement of Jews in the country. The first section of the permanent exhibition will concentrate on the immigration and integration of the Jews in Oslo and Norway down to 1940. The second section will present the history of the Holocaust. The third section will deal with the continuity in the history of the Jews of Oslo since liberation. Cooperation agreed between the Jewish Community and the Municipal Museum in 2002 will facilitate the implementation of the plans.
The Jewish Museum was officially founded in January 2004 in cooperation with the Municipal Museum of Oslo. Several months later, it was granted financial assistance from the Norwegian Arts Council and other state agencies.
The Jewish Museum plans to open its doors to the public in October 2006 with a permanent exhibition in the former synagogue at Calmeyergaten 15, in the centre of Oslo. There were no services held in this synagogue after 1942.
