The internment camp Villa Oliveto was established in June 1940 with space for 70 people. German, French, British and Polish Jews were interned here along with Lybian Jews of British nationality. In June 1942 all Jews without family were moved to another camp. Only the Lybian families remained interned in the villa. On February 5, 1944 the Jews were moved to the prisons of Florence by the Security Police and later transferred to the Fossoli transit camp. They were deported from here to Bergen-Belsen from where they were released four months later.

The Documentation Center in “Villa Oliveto” in Italy was erected in 2001 in Civitella in Val di Chiana (AR) on the encouragement of the Association for the History and Memorial Work of the Republic and the Community of Civitella. The Center works to preserve and convey the history of the camp and also offers visitors information, documents, ideas and educational instruments on internment as well as in general on the politics of exclusion and imprisonment in the 20th century.
