in detail
Following the collapse of the »Gotenlinie« in the summer of 1944, the front line was situated in the area of the communities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Moranti. The partisan brigade »Stella Rossa« (Red Star) was active in this area.
German troops and fascist militias carried out raids and acts of revenge against these attacks. Particularly in the days between 29 September and 5 October 1944, they were responsible for various bloodbaths in which 770 people were murdered. The number of dead totalled 995; among these were 216 children, 316 women and 142 elderly.
The »Monte Sole Historical Park« was established in 1989 by the region of Emilia Romagna. It aims to commemorate the resistance movement and the massacre by the German troops and fascist militias, to spread the message of peace and to protect the environment.
The »Monte Sole Peace School Foundation« intends, using several projects, to promote the dialogue between peoples and cultures and directs its work here particularly towards young people. The Foundation is a place where groups and individuals can meet who want to campaign to defend and spread peace and the principles of freedom and justice and, for these purposes, it organizes educational workshops for school classes of all years.
