The monument is on the »Square of the Jewish Holocaust Martyrs« (Plateia Evreon Martyron tou Olokaftomatos) in the city centre.
Until September 1943, Larissa was under Italian occupation. When Italy capitulated and the German Wehrmacht took over the Italian occupation zone, the seizure and deportation of the Jews began also in this region. On 25 März 1944, 255 Jewish residents of Larissa were arrested and taken by train to the AuschwitzBirkenau extermination camp.
On 8 February 1982 a square in the centre of the city was renamed »Square of the Jewish Holocaust Martyrs« (Plateia Evreon Martyron tou Olokaftomatos). On 5 April 1987, the monument there was unveiled.
Larissa in Thessaly was a centre for the deportation of Jews from Greece. In the city itself, on 25 March 1944, under German occupation, all 225 Jewish residents were arrested and deported to AuschwitzBirkenau. In 1987 the monument in memory of the victims was unveiled on the »Square of the Jewish Holocaust Martyrs«.
