On 25 March 1944, all the Jewish inhabitants of Ioannina, 1,850 men, women and children, were herded to the quay by the lake, loaded onto trucks and taken to Larissa, and from there by train to the AuschwitzBirkenau extermination camp.
The dedication celebrations for the memorial took place from 23 to 25 September 1994. It is directly opposite the gate in the wall of the old Jewish quarter.
