The monument is in the city centre of Chalkida in Messapion Street, on the edge of the Jewish cemetery.
Until September 1943, Chalkida was under Italian occupation. When Italy capitulated and the German Wehrmacht took over the Italian occupied zone, the new occupying power began taking repressive measures against the Jews.
On 25 March 1944, 155 Jewish residents of Chalkida were taken by train to Larissa and from there to the AuschwitzBirkenau extermination camp.
The monument was erected between 1998 and 2000.
