In May 1944 the Bad Friedrichshall-Kochendorf salt mine is to be enlarged into a massive armaments factory with great expenditure. The SS establishes a concentration camp ca. 4 kilometer from the salt mine solely for this purpose. The Kochendorf concentration camp becomes a subsidiary camp of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp in Alsace. Prisoners continued to be sent to Kochendorf until mid-February 1945. The last prisoner transport arrived from the Mannheim-Sandhofen concentration camp. The prisoners of the concentration camp worked under deadly conditions: Over 200 Jewish and non-Jewish concentration camp prisoners lost their lives here. Another 200 people died during the death march to the Dachau concentration camp that began when the SS evacuated the camp before the advancing US army arrived.
