in detail
The Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies undertakes research, information and education on genocides and genocidal events. The Department is Denmark’s only research, information and education unit in regards to genocide, mass violence, prosecution of these crimes against humanity, and reconciliation after such atrocities.
Part of the Department’s work is to bring up genocide for discussion and communicate knowledge on genocide to the public, politicians, media, public institutions, NGO’s, and the entire educational sector. This is done through, amongst others, the annual Danish Auschwitz Day, educational materials (including educational websites), and seminars for students and teachers. The Department staff members are also available for public seminars in cinemas, libraries etc.
Research is conducted within the following areas:
- The development of theories and concepts relating to the definition and analysis of genocide
- Prevention of genocides and other forms of mass violence
- Empirical research of the Holocaust, other genocides and political mass murder
- Danish aspects of the Holocaust
- Justice and reconciliation after genocide and crimes against humanity
- The memory culture in post-1945 Europe with special reference to the Holocaust and the Gulag
