in detail
The Danish Jewish Museum is the nationwide museum for Danish Jewish culture, art and history. The museum’s purpose is to collect, register, research, preserve and present the Danish Jewish cultural heritage. Changes and static periods of this cultural heritage are presented in a cultural, historical and artistic context.
An important part of the museum’s task is to document and research Jewish life in Denmark. Furthermore, the museum is in contact with many scholars who work with relevant subjects, and it participates in the support of this research and in its presentation to a wide audience.
The museum presents knowledge about Jewish culture in Denmark as part of Denmark’s cultural heritage. It uses various media to reach its audience and offers knowledge on many levels.
The museum’s collection presents selected subjects to the audience. It is supplemented by films and AV media in the museum room, while folders and material on the museum’s website give people the possibility to immerse themselves in the material even after their visit. The museum shop also contains various publications.
Presenting the material to children and youths is an important part of the museum’s activities. The highly experiential architecture is in itself a key to a Jewish universe and Danish Jewish history. The museum offers tours and narrators, who can contribute with their own personal angle on the stories of the exhibition.
Additional to its school service, the museum offers group tours for any interested groups, such as associations or companies.
The Danish Jewish museum collects documentation in the form of objects, documents, publications, films, audio recordings and other sources in order to shed light on Danish Jewish history, art and culture. By preserving this material and making it available to scholars and other interested people, the museum is preserving knowledge about Danish Jewish culture and the development of a minority in Denmark.
