in detail
The "Fondation Auschwitz" – and since 2004 the "Mémoire d’Auschwitz", created in 1980 by the Belgian Association of Ex-Political Prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Camps and Prisons of Silesia, is a recognised Centre for lifetime study by the Ministry of Education. It was established as a Study and Documentation Centre with the purpose of information and education in order to allow the analysis and research on the highly complex historical processes leading to the world of the Nazi concentration camps and the Jewish and Gypsy genocides. The “Mémoire d'Auschwitz” also works to integrate remembrance of Nazi crimes and genocides into contemporary historical consciousness, so as to prevent the resurgence of ideologies or regimes which trample human dignity and freedom under foot. It also aims to inform the public, particularly the younger generations, about the history of the Third Reich, the world of the Nazi concentration camps, the Second World War and the genocide of the Jewish and Gypsy communities which was perpetrated by the Nazis.
The library of the Study and Documentation Centre, set up for teachers, students and researchers, is open to the public, offering more than 8.000 books on the History and the Memory of Nazi crimes and genocides. The Centre edited, quarterly, the "Bulletin de la Fondation Auschwitz" (89 numbers have been edited so far) and the "International Journal: Studies on the audio-visual testimony of victims of the crimes and genocides".
